July around Chicagoland Speedway brings classic Midwestern summer weather – hot afternoons, warm evenings, and a decent chance of thunderstorms, especially later in the day. It’s a true summer-race feel for the NASCAR weekend.
Average temperatures
Daytime highs usually run in the mid-80s °F (29–30 °C), and it’s not unusual for temps to push into the upper 80s or low 90s °F (31–33 °C) during hotter spells. Nighttime lows typically settle in the mid-60s to low 70s °F (18–22 °C), so evenings stay warm and a bit humid rather than cool.
Typical conditions
Expect a mix of sunshine and clouds with moderate to high humidity. Afternoons can feel quite hot in the grandstands or infield, especially in direct sun, while the heat eases a bit after sunset. If you plan to stay for post-race concerts or hang out in the campgrounds after dark, light, breathable clothing is best – you probably won’t need more than a thin hoodie at most.
Rain
July is one of the wetter months in the Chicago area, with roughly 3.5–4.0 in (about 90–100 mm) of rain over the month, mainly from scattered showers and thunderstorms.
Storms are often brief but can be heavy, so rain delays are possible even if the whole day doesn’t wash out. A lightweight poncho or compact rain jacket is worth packing.
Wind
Typical breezes sit around 5–15 mph (8–24 km/h). It’s usually calm to moderately breezy in the stands, though winds can become gusty when thunderstorms move through. Most of the time, conditions are stable enough to be comfortable for both fans and teams on pit road.
